If you know me, you know my brain does some weird things sometimes. Hence my title “Butterflies, Catfish and Bullfrogs”. So, what do all those things have in common with each other? Easy, they’re all compound words. But here’s the main reason I’m writing this – they’re all compound words that realistically make no sense whatsover.
Just think about it for a while – think of the word “butterfly”. It’s not flying butter now, is it? Same with catfish – it’s not a cat mixed with a fish (although they are kinda called that because of the long “whiskers” but just work with me here ???? And bullfrog – my friends, I’m pretty positive that you can’t mix a bull with a frog – or can you?
Here’s the thing – these are simply all compound words that simply don’t really make an ounce of sense being combined with each other. There’s others – like peanut, chickpea, dragonfly, hotdog – I mean seriously you can probably come up with a million of these if you took the time.
So I think my main thing is this – how in the world did some of these words come about? I mean, someone saw a bullfrog in a pond and said “ooh, I think I’ll call that a bullfrog”
I bet I made you think today ????
