If you’ve seen that type of face before – or you have felt that face form as your own expression when you’ve heard others talk in our area, this article might be for you ?
Ladies and gents, we’re talking about idioms. Not idiots…..idioms. Oh come on now, I know for a fact you’re thinking about idiots.
Vocab lesson – an idiom is an expression such as “it’s raining cats and dogs”. I would hope to the heavens above that it isn’t physically raining cats and dogs because that would be a horrendous mess to clean up – but you understand now right?
With that said, here are idioms that many of us say in our Greenville surroundings, so that others who have moved to this area might have a better understanding on what they’re hearing ?
Y’all – I KNOW you’ve heard this one. It’s a combination of you and all, if you haven’t figured that out yet, but it’s just so easy to say.
Might Could – means “that could be a possibility but I don’t have enough information right now to decide.”
Bless Your Heart – Nope, we’re not referring to your cardiovascular health. Sometimes it’s an expression of deepest sympathy, concern and compassion. And sometimes, well, sometimes it’s the most cutting thing a South Carolinian can say.
Cackalacky – Oh this is our catch phrase! We say this when something goofy happens.
Butter my butt and call me a biscuit! – One of my favorites! Simply means – Oh My!
Don’t borrow trouble – Simply means keep your mouth shut!
I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck – I wasn’t born yesterday!
Her cornbread ain’t done in the middle – She’s not too sharp
There are so many others idioms for our area – but this gives you a good idea that you aren’t crazy, and that we do in fact speak a different language around here sometimes! Y’all take care now, ya hear?
