Tours by stomach

Greenville is emerging
as a culinary dream! When magazines like USA TODAY, Zagat, Esquire and Southern
Living start paying attention with Yahoo! and TripAdvisor online it is time to
agree. On that note, I have located some culinary tours that may interest you
and your stomach.
Although there are lots of lunch and dinner choices,
recently options for breakfast have been added to the tours. The first
destination is Famous Toastery.
  • Famous Toastery. Since 2005, they have been serving scratch-made
breakfast classics as well as a few unique offerings. Impeccable service
which makes you feel like a local and eat like a king.
  • Biscuit Head. Next stop is a trendy spot that serves breakfast
all day. They serve up “crowd favorites” as well as off-menu specialties.
You might try a selection from the flavored-butter or home-made jam bar.
  • LeGrand Bakery. Founded in 2013, the owners, who had a
successful bakery in France, brought their authentic creations to
Greenville. Hand-crafted, flaky concoctions with French coffee.
Tour begin under the awing at the Westin Poinsett Hotel or
Joel’s Java coffee. This is a driving tour so you will be dropped back at this
location. Bring your camera/phone and appetite. Tour includes food at each
restaurant and drinks. Tip for the tour guide typically 15-20% of the ticket
price. To see days available, check out this webpage.
Now you move on to the Greenville BBQ Trail Tour. Yahoo.com
recently ranked Greenville a Top 10 BBQ City in America. This tour takes you
outside the city to places the locals visit. Most smoke their meats right on
site. Included in the tours:
  • Insights on each
    restaurant’s techniques and cooking process
  • Restaurant history
  • Information about
    Greenville BBQ history
  • Drive through old textile
    mill villages
  • And the food!
You will visit Bucky’s Bar-B-Q, Henry’s Smokehouse and Mike
& Jeff’s BBQ. Pickup in front of Greenville City Hall. Casual attire,
comfortable shoes. Tour includes BBQ meats, sides, drinks, BBQ history,
Greenville history and a brochure. Tip for the tour guide typically $6-$8 per
person. Children older than 12 are most appropriate for this tour. To see days
available, check out this webpage.
Lastly, there is a chef’s table tour. Five different
destinations gives you a chance to meet five different chefs and dine at their
tables. The places you will visit are
  • 1st stop: Soby’s on the Side or The Loft at Soby’s – We will
taste a signature dish and experience a kitchen visit or a chef’s demo on
    preparing a signature dish.
  • 2nd stop: The Nose Dive – Greenville’s only Gastropub. We will
sample craft beer on tap or wine and made-from-scratch dishes of
    international pub fare.
  • 3rd stop: Soby’s New South Cuisine – Soby’s cuisine is an
eclectic blend of contemporary, international and traditional cuisines.
Soby’s uses fresh, seasonal ingredients, often produced by local farmers.
Our visit will include a sampling of non-alcohol and alcoholic cocktails
made just for us by the bartender, followed by a delicious Southern dish
that may be a crab cake, shrimp & grits, bacon-wrapped pork
tenderloin, or another one of Soby’s unique New South entrees.
  • 4th stop: Passarelle Bistro–delicious food inspired by French
cuisine. Voted a top 10 outdoor dining restaurant in America!
  • 5th stop: Lazy Goat – A fantastic dessert at The Lazy Goat in
the West End is a perfect way to wrap up the tour.
Pickup is at Soby’s on the Side and drop off will be The
Lazy Goat. This tour includes drinks, food and historical information. Tip for
the tour guide typically $5-$8 per person). Again, this tour may not be
appropriate for smaller children. To see days available, check out this webpage.
If you take one of the tours, let me know what you thought
about it.
